The Weekend to End Breast Cancer Becomes Bigger and Bolder

Alberta Cancer Foundation aims to eliminate all women’s cancers with exciting new additions to its blockbuster event

(Calgary, February 23) - The profound impact of The Weekend to End Breast Cancer® benefiting the Alberta Cancer Foundation is broadening in the community. Participants now have the option to designate their fundraising dollars to combat breast cancer or other women’s cancers such as ovarian or cervical cancer. The 2009 edition of The Weekend to End Breast Cancer event, taking place in Calgary July 25-26, will also offer the choice to do the standard 2-day 60km walk or the new 1-day, 30km component.

Linda Mickelson, CEO of the Alberta Cancer Foundation explains the rationale behind making The Weekend to End Breast Cancer bigger and bolder. “This event has been incredibly successful and we want to broaden its scope and increase participation to make an even bigger impact and affect more lives,” says Mickelson.

“The mission of the Alberta Cancer Foundation is to build a cancer-free future. This is an important part of the journey as we work, step by step, to eliminate all women’s cancers.”

These thoughts are echoed by Dr. Christine Friedenreich, a researcher at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre who studies breast and endometrial cancers. “Many of the risk factors for breast cancer are the same as those for endometrial and ovarian cancers.” Says Dr. Friedenreich. “We know that being physically active, maintaining a healthy weight and a balanced diet can help reduce the risk of these cancers. It is encouraging that the scope of the Weekend to End Breast Cancer has been expanded. The power of this event will dramatically increase the chances of major breakthroughs in prevention, treatment and care of these cancers.”
